Day 3 - Hasami to Nagasaki

The first part of this ride is sensational.  After a short climb out of Hasami you roll down into the next valley through ripe fields of rice with their beautiful aroma.  After passing Haiki you come off the main road and down by Omura Bay through mandarin orchards and really pleasant riding along the shoreline.  Our lunch stop at Sakai kitchen was a good distance and a great meal.

After lunch I made a mistake and I recommend you do not follow our route.  I restarted the route navigation after lunch and then made a 20m detour to grab some water from a local shop.  The departure from route triggered a reroute followed by an argument with the app to restore the original route, which after the event, turns out I lost.  The first sign of trouble was an unexpected climb on a road with no shoulder and eventually a tunnel with no provision for bicycles.  The tunnel was short and downhill so we opted to 'run the gauntlet'.  We continued to climb and encountered 3 more tunnels, thankfully with narrow bike lanes, but the last was more than 3kms long.  By the time we emerged from the belly of the earth we were more than a little frazzled.

My recommendation would be to stay on the 206 road.  It's not particularly scenic but it'll avoid a 100m or so of climb.

Stay and Eat

The Richmond Hotel in Nagasaki has convenience stores, shops and restaurants all pretty much at your door.  There was no problem with secure parking for our bikes and the valets were friendly and helpful in getting them stored away.

Sakai Kitchen, located in the Nagasaki Holland Village was well located for a lunch stop and the food was good.

See and Do

We had three days (four nights) in Nagasaki.  That gave us time to

  • Explore Heiwa Koen (Peace Park)
  • Take the ropeway up to Mt Inasa to take in views of the city
  • Enjoy the Kunchi Matsuri which happened to be on while we were in town
  • Take the cruise out to Hashima (Gunkanjima) which was used as the location of the villian's lair in the Bond film Skyfall, but its real history is far more interesting.
  • Stroll through Glover Gardens and up the Dutch Slope
  • Take the obligatory photo of Megane Bridge
  • Be thoroughly amused by the antics of the penguins at the aquarium
